ADVISORY BOARD MEETING: May 4, 2008

The Center’s Advisory Board held a meeting on Sunday, May 4, 2008 at the Hayward residence of Rica Llorente.

The meeting agenda:

  1. Public Announcements
  2. Report on the Project “Symposium”
  3. Adjournment
Meeting Pictures - 5-4-08

MINUTES OF THE MEETING

Rica Llorente, recorder

Attendees:

Efren Padilla,  Rica Llorente, April Tablante, Chris Baytan, Manny Valle, Sophie and Remy Pasibe,  Irene Gregorio, Jon Palacio, Manny Fernandez, Julius Willis, Michael Gonzalez.

  1. Sophie Pasibe invited CFS  members to attend the Mother’s Day Gala in Black and White in Benecia on Saturday, May 17.  It is a fundraising dinner of lobster for $40.00 per person.  Her husband Remy will email the details of the event to the CFS members.

  2. Rica Llorente gave an overview of the symposium in October on “Political Leadership among Filipino Americans:  Theories and Practice.”  She reported that they had presented it to CSUEB officials specifically Dr. Carl Bellone, Vice President for Graduate Affairs and to Chief of Staff of Pres. Qayoumi Dr. Don Sawyer.  They support the symposium and other programs of CFS.

Rica went over the details of the program including the conference hall which has been booked and reserved by PASA students led by April Tablante.  She also reported that almost all speakers except for Michael Guingona have accepted.  The keynote speaker is Dr. Belinda Aquino of the Univ. of Hawaii.

Rice also reported that additional funds are needed because the registration fee of $10.00 is for purposes of attracting students.  The fee includes food of coffee and ensaymada in the morning and lunch catered by Goldilocks.  An additional $2,000 is needed and the students will try to request for $1,000 from ASI.  However, there may be an issue of timing because they can only do this in the fall and it may be too late for the symposium.

Members are encouraged to donate and to help out with the tasks.

Rica will call a meeting of the speakers, panel and participants on Sunday, August 3because the goal is to have all the details in place a month before the symposium.  Attached to the minutes is the program.

  3. Efren reported that the  NVM Gonzalez scholarship is ready to be implemented with Cris Raimundo donating $500.00 for the prize-winning essay this year.

Next meetings:
   Sunday, June 29, 4:00pm, barbecue, Rica’s house
Sunday, August 3, 4:00pm, dry run of symposium, Rica’s house

The meeting was adjourned at 6:45 PM.
