- Rica Llorente discussed the Strategic Plan 2008-2010 as finalized. It is the framework for the programs and projects for the next two years, to be implemented by the five committees. The Plan will be presented to the University officials.
Rica also informed the members that she has been in contact with the University’s publicist Diane Daniel for brochures of CFS. In addition, Rica discussed the concept for the forthcoming symposium in October on the topic of Political Leadership in the Filipino American community.
- Sophie Pasibe discussed the Lakbay Aral project which will bring teachers and students to the Philippines from July 13 to the 29th. March 15 is the deadline for interested parties. There will be a cost to the tour of around $2,700 for two weeks. Sophie requested to be transferred from the Finance Committee to the Community Relations committee.
- Chuck Pe Benito discussed the application for a Creative Work fund grant and the concept of submitting a proposal for a mural depicting the Filipino Diaspora. Rica will assist in the preparation of the application while Chuck will be the lead artist together with two others from the Philippines. Submission of the application is in 2009, so there is one year to prepare for this. Further, the vision is for the mural to go on tour in different East Bay cities with big Filipino communities and eventually to be installed permanent at CSUEASTBAY
- Another grant application is to the California Council for the Humanities with a proposal or Ben Pimentel’s story of elderly Filipinos in Powell Street in San Francisco. Rica will also assist in the preparation of this application which is due April of this year.
- April Tablante discussed the NVM Gonzalez scholarship for CSUEASTBAY students. To be awarded this year, Chris Raimundo will donate scholarship money of $500.
- Mercie de la Cruz discussed the plans and details for the HARANA Y CENA DE GALA, A DINNER SERENADE. The goal is to raise funds for CFS through a musical/dinner event. The date, concept, program features and cost of tickets were discussed and. The original date of May or April did not work for many and October was the next date considered, to coincide with the symposium. The cost of tickets, originally at $100 tax deductible, was deemed too high and $50 was determined to be more feasible.
Corporate sponsors are needed to underwrite the expenses as sale of tickets is hard to predict and to depend on to cover the costs.
The featured artists proposed will have to be consulted as to their availability for the new date. The venue to be considered is Hayward Centennial Hall.
- VII. The meeting adjourned at 7:30pm and the members were invited to a delicious dinner prepared by Gertrude Gregorio.
