Minutes of the general membership meeting and Christmas dinner party held December 15, 2007 at the Union City residence of Gertrude and Carlen Gregorio.

MINUTES OF THE MEETING

Rica Llorente, recorder

Present:

Efren, Julie and Andrea Padilla, Sophie and Remy Pasibe, Carlen and Gertrude Gregorio, Julius and Norma Willis, Penelope Flores, Mercie de la Cruz, Pat Gacoscos, Jun-Jun Villegas, Jenny Montenegro, Chuck Pe Benito, Ben Pimental, April Tablante, Rica Llorente, PASA student.

  1. With new members present, the group started by introducing themselves, what they do, where they work, and when they came to the U.S.  It demonstrated the rich diversity of the members.  Penelope Flores announced the publication of her new book “The Philippine Jeepney: A Filipino Family Metaphor.”  An excerpt will be featured in the journal.
  2. Efren then gave a brief overview of the achievements of the year, such as the website, the electronic journal, the fundraising luncheon, the Strategic Plan, and the Abe Ignacio book exhibit.  He also commented on fulfilling the required $10,000 for the NVM Gonzalez scholarship endowment.
  3. Efren discussed the three major projects planned for the year, namely:

    1.  HARANA - formal dinner is envisioned as a fundraiser and showcase for traditional Filipino serenade, food and dance to occur Saturday, April 12 at CSUEASTBAY New University Union. A new addition to the event will be the exhibit of paintings by Filipino painter and CFS member Chuck Pe Benito. PASA will be the main proponent and will be responsible for reserving the venue.  Harana expert Florante Aguilar has agreed to provide the guitar music, and PASA will provide the folk dances.  Filipino food will be served for dinner.

Efren announced that tickets will cost $50 for students and $100.00 for the rest.

    2.  In June, the East Bay Fiesta Islands festival will be held in Union City to coincide with Philippine Independence Day. Jenny Montenegro will market the festival in order to raise funds.

    3.  A symposium on the topic of “Filipino Political Leadership and Unity” is planned for October as part of the Filipino Heritage month.  Local Filipino leaders will be invited to speak on how they achieved support and success, what the obstacles are, what lessons can be learned and what next steps can be taken to strengthen the presence of the Filipino community in the American political arena.  The presentations will be crafted into articles for the journal.

  4. Next meeting is in January in Rica Llorente’s house to start organizing the events.

The evening was highlighted by a sumptuous dinner, giveaway of boneless bangus and other Philippine products courtesy of Mercie de la Cruz, and an enjoyable gift game which made everyone roll with laughter.
