Minutes of the Special Working Committee meeting held Sunday, November 23, 2008 at the Hayward reidence of Rica S. Llorente.

MINUTES OF THE MEETING

Rica Llorente, recorder

Present:

Present:  Efren Padilla, April Tablante, Chris Baytan, Rica Llorente, Julius Willis, Cynthia Rapaido, Ed Lacson, Chuck Pe Benito, and Lycette Kintanar.

  1. Introduction:  Efren welcomed the new members of the Advisory Board, Dr. Ed Lacson, Cynthia Rapaido and Lycette Kintanar.

  2. Grant Applications for 2009:  Rica discussed the concept plans for two grant applications in 2009 in order to raise funds for CFS.  First is the application for visual arts in terms of a mural.  Chuck Pe Benito elaborated as he will be the lead artist.  The mural will depict Filipino diaspora, memories and dreams.  The mural will go on tour in the Bay area cities with large Filipino American communities.  The project will be launched in December with a display and auction of the 12 paintings shown during the symposium.  The application cycle for this grant starts in March.  Rica will prepare the grant application. Chuck requested for input from the group on what they would like to see on the mural.  He will solicit input from students in the next PASA meeting.

  3. The second grant application is for the CA Council for the Humanities for an electronic book about stories of Filipinos in California since the early 20th century when Filipino farmers were recruited to work the fields of the Central Valley like Stockton and Delano, the labor struggles and political awakening.  It will mean interviewing the Manongs in Stockton and the political leaders in the San Francisco Bay area.  The project will also include a workshop to present the findings of the project and an upgrade of the websites of the Center and the Journal.  Dr. Ed Lacson and hopefully Oscar Penaranda will be involved in this project.  Ed raised the issue of a hard copy book that he and Oscar would like to produce on the same topic.  The question is whether there will be a conflict of copyright.

  4. Chris Baytan briefly discussed the workshops that he and Chris Mateo are planning, dedicated to the students.  These would be on leadership and management, and on grant writing, possibly in January.

  5. Lycette discussed her proposal to start a performing arts group wherein she would train dancers on Philippine dances on an ongoing basis with the goal of establishing a professional group.  Working with PASA for the annual Philippine Cultural Night will provide the basis to start and from there expand to bigger goals.
