- Efren discussed four topics with the members, namely, the NVM Gonzalez scholarship, HARANA formal dinner at CSUEASTBAY in April, the Annual Intergenerational Symposium in October, and the Abe Ignacio book exhibit in a couple of weeks. He also identified the responsible committees for the projects.
- Efren announced that his wife’s family foundation is donating $2,000 to fill the gap and complete the $10,000 required by the University for the NVM Gonzalez Scholarship. Also, Chris Raimundo is donating the $500 NVM scholarship for this year. Efren suggested that an essay contest be conducted to determine who the winner of the scholarship will be. Since the goal of the scholarship is to generate interest in Filipino and Filipino American Studies, the essay themes suggested are identity, intergenerational/inter-racial relations and personal experiences on growing up between two worlds.
The Student Affairs committee chaired by Irene Gregorio will be responsible for this project. They will have a status report to Efren by Nov. 26.
- HARANA formal dinner is envisioned as a fundraiser and showcase for traditional Filipino serenade, food, and folk dances to occur Saturday, April 12 at CSUEASTBAY New University Union. PASA will be the main proponent and will be responsible for reserving the venue. Harana expert Florante Aguilar has agreed to provide the guitar music, and PASA will provide the folk dances. Filipino food will be served for dinner. The group discussed the cost of ticket with a meal---for students ($45) and for non-student donors ($100). For those who cannot attend but simply want to donate, any amount will also be accepted. President Mo will be invited to formally receive the CFS Strategic Plan although it is planned to submit this to him well before the dinner.
The Finance Committee chaired by Efren will be responsible for this event.
- A symposium is envisioned for October next year and after much discussion, it was agreed to have “Filipino Political Leadership and Unity” as the theme. Local Filipino leaders will be invited to speak on how they achieved support and success, what the obstacles are, what lessons can be learned and what next steps can be taken to strengthen the presence of the Filipino community in the American political arena.
The Student Affairs committee will be responsible for this event.
- Irene discussed the upcoming book exhibit of Abe Ignacio on Nov. 29 in campus.
- Michael Gonzalez who came at noon discussed several strategies with Rica. First, he announced that the next Writers’ Workshop will be in 2009 in Leyte, Philippines, sponsored by University of the Philippines, Visayas. Second, he suggested that the Filipino minor curriculum be expanded to be a major course instead because no university in the country other than possibly Univ. of Hawaii offers this. He also added that CFS initiate a study of the ratio of Filipino tenured professors at CSUEASTBAY to Filipino students and if there is a significant disparity, advocate for appointment of more Filipinos in the professoriate.
After the meeting and on the matter of new members, Rica indicated to Efren that Dr. Federico Magdalena, a sociologist at the University of Hawaii, is being highly recommended by a colleague and CFS member Dr. Vincent Pollard. Dr. Magdalena has expressed his interest to be a member. His resume is on the following website: www.hawaii.edu/cps/fm.html
- Next meeting is on Saturday, Dec. 15, 6:00pm, at the Union City residence of Carlen and Gertrude Gregorio (34778 Williams Way, Union City, CA 94587).
